Nine Track and Field Athletes Compete in Atlanta

Atlanta, Ga. – With NCAA East Preliminaries just two weeks away, nine members of the Tennessee State track and field teams took part in this weekend’s Georgia Tech Invitational in hopes of qualifying for the regional tournament.

On Friday of the Invite, the jumpers of TSU were showcased including Clairwin Dameus who finished third in the women’s long jump. Her leap of 6.14 meters bested those of competitors from the University of North Carolina and Florida State.

Dameus’s teammate Ashontae Jackson, who will most likely compete in the East Preliminaries later this month, finished sixth in the long jump with a hop of 6.02 meters.

On the men’s side, Royce Dates finished ninth with a jump that spanned 7.12 meters. He narrowly edged teammate Tyler Anderson whose 7.04 meters placed him 11th.

A couple of runners also made the trip to Atlanta including Quanisha Sales who placed 10th in the women’s 100-meter dash after completing the run in 12.04 seconds. TSU’s Leslye Williams came in 30th in the event with a time of 12.56.

On Saturday, Sales continued her strong performance as she finished in 12th place in the 200-meter dash after a time of 24.68 seconds. Diera Taylor placed 36th after clocking in at 25.74.

Dameus also had a solid day two, coming in 18th in the 400-meter hurdles by completing the event in 1:03.11. She then teamed with Jackson, Taylor and Sales to place finish second in the 4x100 meter relay after a time of 45.20 seconds.

For the Flying Tigers, day two started with Emmanuel Thornton notching a 20th place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 54.74 seconds.

Daryl Rice followed by coming in 10th in the men’s high jump with a leap of two meters.

The Invite came to a close with Anderson placing seventh in the triple jump after his third skip spanned 14.66 meters.

The Tigers will await their fate and continue to train for the NCAA East Preliminaries on May 23.
