Tigers Open OVC Play at Jacksonville State

Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State will concluded their spring break by opening Ohio Valley Conference play at Jacksonville State University. The Tigers have compiled a 9-16 record on the season, including a 4-6 mark over spring break. The two teams will open with a twin bill on Saturday and close with a single game on Sunday. Both days will have a 1:00 pm start time.

The weekend series will pit the top two strikeout leaders in the conference. Sophomore Shea Morris leads the OVC with 114 K's, while JSU's Tiffany Harbin has 111. Morris is number two on the TSU career list with 304 punch outs halfway through her second season. She is just the second pitcher in school history to reach 300 in a career.

Olivia Gamache is experiencing her best season of her three-year career. Her three wins this season is already more than the first two seasons combined. Gamache has lowered her ERA each year, going from 7.42 as a first-year to 5.18 as a sophomore to 3.06 as a junior. With four more strikeouts, Gamache will enter the Top 10 of the TSU career list.

Jennifer Givens continues to lead the Tigers in hitting at .417 (30-for-72) and is followed by Ashley Haynes at .370 (17-for-46). In 2012, the Tigers had three batters combine for four home runs. So far in 2013, five players have a combined eight long balls.

JSU is hitting .282 as a team with 46 doubles, three triples and 17 home runs. They have scored 134 runs in 23 games and sport four batters over .300, led by Savannah Sloan at .364. Sara Borders and Krystal Ruth follow at .343 and. 333, respectively. The duo lead the Gamecocks with eight doubles a piece. Kalee Tabor (.301) provides the power with seven dingers and 24 runs driven in. Tiffany Harbin leads the pitching staff with 84.2 innings pitched and 111 strikeouts. Harbin is 7-4 with a 2.89 ERA. Casey Akenberger and Hilary Phillips provide the largest amount of the support for JSU. Akenberger has recorded two saves, while Phillips is 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA.
