Tiger Softball Prepares for HBCU Play This Weekend

Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State softball will travel to take part in the Tiny Lassiter HBCU Classic in Irondale, Ala. The three day tournament will see the Tigers take on five teams from the MEAC. Howard is the first opponent for TSU on Friday at 5 pm. Saturday features a match up with Maryland-Eastern Shore at 10 am followed by a 2 pm contest versus Savannah State. The Tigers will open the final day of play at 11:30 am against Hampton and close out the classic with South Carolina State at 1:30 pm.

TSU earned their first win of the season last week at the TSU Tiger Invitational with a 7-2 victory over IUPUI. Coach Dabney's squad finished the weekend with a 1-3 record and is now 1-10.

Olivia Gamache earned the win against the Jaguars and was named to the all-tournament team. Ashley Haynes accompanied Gamache on the 13-player honor roll as she compiled a .714 average over four games and added a double and a triple.

On the season, Haynes leads the team with a .357 average and is followed by Kiarra Freeman at .323. In the circle, Olivia Gamache has thrown 37.1 innings and is 1-4 with a 3.00 ERA. Shea Morris has notched 39 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Dominique Lawrence batted .321 in 2012 and scored 20 runs, while leading the team with three home runs and 24 RBI. Lawrence was also the Bison's top pitcher with a 6-13 record and a save. She fanned 76 batters and walked 83 in 123 innings. Howard returns five members from last years team.

The Hawks enter the weekend hitting .313 as a team with 10 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 21 stolen bases. UMES sports six batters hitting over .300, including three over .400. Jasmine James leads all hitters with a .474 average and has six walks for a .600 on base percentage. On the base paths, Vanessa Gomez has a team high eight swipes in 11 tries. Carmen Gurrola is the workhorse for the Hawks pitching 36.2 innings of the 49 total on the year. The senior is 3-3- with a 4.96 ERA and has fanned 20 batters opposed to three walks.

SSU boasts a .312 team average with 31 doubles and eight home runs on the early season. Torrain Wright is the top Tiger hitting .447 with three doubles and five home runs. Wright has crossed home plate 11 times and leads the team with 12 RBI. Madison Hedderly is 5-3 with a save in the circle and has pitched in 10 of the Tigers 14 games. Hedderly has a 3.68 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 13 walks.

The Lady Pirates are paced by Bobbi Langlois and Adrianna Scott. Langlois is hitting .433 in 11 games with four doubles and 10 RBI. Scott is second on the team at .342 in 14 games and has team highs in runs (9), triples (1), home runs (3) and RBI (13). Jailynn Jackson has imerged as the ace of the pitching staff with four straight wins and holds a 4-3 record and a 3.41 ERA. Jackson has recorded 45 strikeouts in 49.2 innings. Langlois is 1-5 in the circle with a save.

Mikala Johnson is one of five Bulldogs hitting over .300 and is one of three with two triples. LaTavia Riley has crossed home plate a team leading nine times in just eight of SCSU's ten games. Vianney Gomez and Leigha Hite have thrown 98% of the innings for the Bulldogs. Gomez is 5-1 with a 0.65 ERA and has 23 K's against four walks in 32.1 innings. Hite (2-2, 3.66) has fanned just 16 batters and has issued 11 free passes, to go along with five hit batters, in 28.2 innings.
