BUCHANAN, Tenn. - The men's golf team finished in a tie for ninth at the Skyhawk Classic at the Paris Landing State Park Golf Course. Tennessee State stayed true to form from the previous two rounds as they totaled a 7-over 295 during the final round on the Par-72, 6,685 yard course.
TSU and Alabama State have squared off in two previous tournaments this fall with the Hornets claiming the bragging rights on both occasions. The Tigers entered Tuesday trailing ASU by eight strokes, but were able to track them down to pull even with a three-round total of 881.
James Stepp led the day for the Big Blue with a 2-under 70 and climbed to a 10th place finish. Stepp (1-under 215) completed the tournament five strokes off individual champion Tyler Shellnut's (UT Martin) 6-under 210.
Cameron Scitern carded a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and finished tied for 26th with a 3-over 219. Andrew Warner shot a third round 76 to post an 8-over 224, while Shane Sampier (3-over 75) and Dallas Hill (5-over 77) ended the day at a 10-over 226.
Matt Campbell, playing as an individual, moved up five spots from the second round and finished tied for 55th after a 4-over 76 for a 54-hole total of 228.
"Everyone hit the ball great, but our putting held us back," head coach Chris Seibel said. "The greens made it difficult to make some putts, but we need to make adjustments to match other teams and give us opportunities to challenge our opponents."
Next on the docket for TSU is a trip to play in the Donald Ross Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State University. The tournament will begin on Oct. 14 in Morgantown, N.C.
