Flying Tigers Win, Tigerbelles Second at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Tennessee State men's and women's cross country teams registered strong showings at the 5K Bethune-Cookman Beach Invite on Friday evening. The Flying Tigers grabbed the top spot with 22 points ahead of second place Ed Waters with 36. The Tigerbelles finished second with 42 points just behind Florida A&M who scored a perfect 15. The event was the first of two in as many days.

Gary Pierrelus of Ed Waters won the individual title in 19:13 and was followed by four Flying Tigers, as the men put a strangle-hold on the team title. Adrian McDaniel paced the group at 19:31 followed closely by Jonathan Owens at 19:59, Jamill Jackson in 20:02 and Jalon McCutcheon in 20:06. Theodore Nicholson finished in a season best time of 20:52, good for an eighth place finish.

Vincent Gilmore was the top non-scoring Tiger as he finished in 21:17. Jakeenen Guthrie (22:32) and Jason Griffin (24:01) recorded season best times as they rounded out the field of competitors for TSU.

Breanna Adams placed sixth with a time of 23:37 finishing ahead of Oteia Prince (7th) 24:37 and Latia Carmey (8th) 24:53. Michelle Bradley (25:06) and Charita Harris (25:14) claimed the last two scoring positions for the TSU in tenth and eleventh, respectively.

Gabrielle Todd led the non-scoring runners crossing the line at 25:58. Diera Taylor finished in 26:29, Brianna Woodson in 27:26, Jasmine Owens in 27:30, Ashontae Jackson in 28:43 and Kya Riley in 29:40.

Both squads will take part in the 15-team Asics Embry-Riddle Classic on Saturday morning. The men start at 7:20 a.m. with an 8K, while the women follow with a 5K at 8:00 a.m.
