The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing one of the most prolific basketball players in Tennessee State history.

Theodore "Ted" McClain was one of TSU's best offensive threats and currently sits at second place in school's all-time scoring list.

When MCclain first joined the Tiger team, legendary head coach Ed Martin was in his first season. McClain found instant success under Martin's tutelage, and led the Tigers to an 85-25 record during his collegiate career.

McClain was TSU's best option around the basket, and he attempted 2,169 shots through his four years. McClain made 951 of those shots, and he scored a total of 2, 309 points.

It was probably best for opponents to just let McClain shoot the ball, because he was a force at the free throw line. He made 496 of his 607 free throw attempts for an 82 percent shooting percentage.

In one memorable game during the 1969-70 season, McClain attempted a school-record 25 free throws. He also made 24, including 21 straight, of those 25 for a 96 percent clip, all three of which are still school records.

In 1970, McClain led the Tigers to the Division II National Championship Game where the team would ultimately fall to Philadelphia University 76-65. However, McClain was so impressive in the game that he was awarded MVP honors even in a losing effort.

Following college, McClain was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in second round of the 1971 NBA Draft.

During his professional career, McClain played a total of eight seasons in the NBA and ABA. He competed for the Carolina Cougars, Kentucky Colonels, New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Buffalo Braves, Philadelphia 76ers, and Phoenix Suns. He averaged 8.4 points per game and 3.4 assits per contest.

McClain was a member of the 1974 ABA All-Star Game and he holds the ABA record for steals in a game with 12, set against the New York Nets on Dec. 26 1973.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
