The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by remembering another one of the most successful Tigerbelles to ever compete at Tennessee State.

Madeline Manning-Mims attended TSU from 1968 to 1972 and won one silver and two gold medals during her collegiate career. She also competed in the Olympics after college in 1976 and in 1980.

Before coming to Tennessee State, Manning-Mims participated in the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo, Japan. At 19 years old, she won the 800-meter dash and earned her first gold medal. She accomplished a similar feat in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and won the same event in the same year at the Pan American Games.

The championship performances overseas caught the eye of renowned TSU track coach Ed Temple. Temple got Manning-Mims to commit to being a Tigerbelle, and her career took off from there.

In her first year under coach Temple, Manning-Mims made U.S.Olympic history, becoming the first American born woman to ever win a gold medal in the 800-meter dash. She accomplished the impressive achievement in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City- the highest city in terms of elevation above sea level to host a Summer Olympics.

Manning-Mims's next medal came in Munich, West Germany in 1972. She teamed with fellow Americans Kathy Hammond, Mable Ferguson and Cheryl Toussaint to take home a silver medal in the 4 x 400-meter relay.

Over the course of her career, Manning-Mims served as captain for the Olympic track teams in 1972, 1976 and 1980. She also won 10 national titles, seven national outdoor championships and four Olympic trials championships.

Manning-Mims was inducted in the National Track Hall of Fame in 1984.

Today, Manning-Mims works as team chaplain for the Tulsa Shock of the WNBA. She is also an author, public speaker and gospel recording artist.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
