The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing a different type of student-athlete.

Most people think of a member of the football, basketball or track team when remembering one of TSU's greatest players. However, William "Tiny" Cox (1946-50) is one of the school's most accomplished athletes, and he made a name for himself due to his prowess in the boxing ring.

Cox attended Tennessee State from 1946-50 and majored in biology. During that time he won four straight Midwestern Intercollegiate Featherweight Boxing Tournaments from 1947-50.

The Memphis native was also named the Golden Gloves Boxing Champion while representing the school in the 1948 and 1950 Golden Glove Competition held in Evansville, Ind.

In 1948 Cox was a semi-finalist in the Chicago Golden Gloves Featherweight Division, and two years later he became a finalist.

Cox was also invited to box for his country by participating in the 1950 Pan American Olympic Boxing Trials.

"Tiny" came back to Tennessee State in 1960 to earn his Masters Degree Administration and Supervision. He has used his degree to become principal at several elementary schools across the Mid-West.

In 1983, Cox was inducted into TSU's Sports Hall of Fame.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
