The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing one of the greatest teams in Tennessee State's history: the 1993-94 women's basketball team.
During the 1993-94 season, the team won a then-school record 20 games and lost only nine. The team also went 13-3 in conference play en route to the team's first ever Ohio Valley Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The championship team was led on the court by first team all-conference selection junior Carolyn Aldridge and second team all-conference selection sophomore Connie Swift. The dynamic duo of Aldridge and Swift was the first of its kind at Tennessee State breaking and setting a handful of school records including points in a game and points in a season.
The 1993-94 team also boasted the most storied and winningest women's basketball coach in the school's history in Teresa Lawrence Phillips. In her first year at Tennessee State, Phillips raised the team's win total from two the previous year to 12. In her fourth season as head coach, the Tigers finally had a winning record in conference play, but it was not until her fifth season that the Tigers won the OVC Championship. Her performance in the 1993-94 season earned her the OVC Coach of the Year Award.
The championship team was a long time coming as the team had mustered a winning percentage of just .351 in its previous six seasons.
The beginning of the season in 1993 started much like the previous six years. Tennessee State lost the first two games of the season to Alcorn State and Grambling State by seven points apiece. From that point, the team would go on to lose just six more games in the entire season and posted a 7-1 record against in-state conference foes.
The Tigers won the regular-season conference championship by virtue of their conference record, but the team still needed to win the conference tournament in order to reach the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers clobbered Middle Tennessee State 88-66 in the first game of the conference tournament before meeting Tennessee Tech in the championship game. Coming into the game, the teams had split the season series at one game apiece, but the Tigers got the better of Tennessee Tech on that day thanks in large part to the school record 34 three-point attempts in the game.
After the conference tournament, it was on to the NCAA Tournament where the Tigers faced Southern Mississippi. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost the game 86-72, but the overall success of the 1993-94 season was something to build around and one of the 100 moments worth remembering in TSU Athletics.
The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
