Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Tennessee State University's men's and women's track and field teams racked up three individual titles and 13 podium finishes at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship at Southeast Missouri State University on Friday and Saturday.
Eastern Illinois swept the outdoor championships, completing a clean sweep of the track & field season after winning both indoor titles. The Flying Tigers placed fourth with 66 points, while the Tigerbelles claimed sixth with 55.5 points.
Senior Arthur Combest finished his illustrious career with five podium finishes. The Memphis product won the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.82, edging his teammate Jahleel Michael's time of 54.23.
Combest placed second in the 110-meter hurdles, pacing a time of 14.50 seconds. In the high jump, he cleared 1.98 meters (6-6) for a third place mark. Combest also earned two podium finishes in the 4x1 and 4x4 relays.
Tigerbelle Freshman Ashontae Jackson claimed the women's long jump title, leaping 6.09-meters (19-11 ¾) to win the title.
In the men's long jump, Royce Dates cleared a distance of 7.45m (24-5 ½) for second place.
Brittani Logan claimed the women's shot put title, throwing a distance of 14.51-meters (47-7 ¼) to secure the champion's medal.
In the triple jump, Ja'Lyn Burr leapt 40-4 (12.29m) for a second place mark. Julian Mallory ran a blazing speed of 21.83 for third in the men's 200-meter dash.
The Tigerbelles claimed two third place finishes in the relays. Carolyn Petway, Breanna Adams, Diera Taylor and Jackson ran a time of 46.86 in the 4x100. Gabrielle Todd, Kya Riley, Adams and Jackson paced a mark of 3:45.38 in the 4x400.
In the men's 4x100, the Flying Tigers (Lamonte Burton, Combest, Dates, Mallory) clocked 41.86 seconds to claim second. The 4x400 team of Michel Johnson, Combest, Mallory and Michael finished second with a time of 3:17.03.
Tennessee State completed the 2012 outdoor track & field season. Some individuals may qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., which will be announced later this week.
