Nashville, Tenn. --- The 2012 Ohio Valley Conference golf predictions have been released in a vote of the league's head coaches.
The Tennessee State University men's golf team was selected to finish ninth while the women were picked to place eighth.
Jacksonville State received seven of the nine first-place votes to finish with the most points (63). That was seven points ahead of second-place Eastern Kentucky who received one first-place vote and 11 points ahead of Austin Peay who received the other first-place vote and was picked third. UT Martin was picked fourth (38) and followed by Tennessee Tech (32), Morehead State (29), Eastern Illinois (22), Murray State (20) and Tennessee State (11).
During the fall season, Cameron Scitern led the Tigers with a 72.4 stroke averages and two top five finishes. His lowest round was a score of 70 in the second round of the Fossum Invitational.
In 2011, Tennessee State finished the rain-shortened Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in seventh place. TSU was paced by Richard Gill who finished in a tie for ninth with a one-under-par 143. He opened the tournament with a (-4) 68 before carding a 75 in the second round. Senior Ryan Smith shot (-1) 71 in the first round before turning in a score of 76 in round two. He finished in a tie for 19th with a score of 147.
Cameron Scitern finished in a five-way tie for 28th after rounds of 74 and 77 to total (+7) 151. Ryan Pierson (74-79) and Andrew Warner (74-79) rounded out the scorers for TSU as they finished in a deadlock for 35th place with identical scores of (+9) 153.
The women's vote was close at the top as eight-time OVC Champion Murray State received four of the eight first-place votes and 44 total points in being picked the favorites. That was one first-place vote and one total point more than defending champion Morehead State who was tabbed second. Jacksonville State (38) and Eastern Kentucky (34 points, 1 first-place vote) were each within 10 points of the favorite in the poll. Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech tied for fifth (32), while Eastern Illinois was picked seventh (14) and Tennessee State was selected eighth (7).
Tennessee State was led by Jamie Pierce this fall season with a stroke average of 82.6. She recorded a low-round of 77 in the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.
Women's golf will kick-off the spring season on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Ann Rhoads Spring Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern.
The men will begin spring action at the Grover Page Classic hosted by Tennessee-Martin on Sunday, March 11.
